Bad or not bad, that is the question
So, in the midst of all of the political hyperactivity I often wonder about the last 8 years. I hear in the media and from all presidential campaigns that we need change from the last 8 years (which equates to President Bush). I would love responses from those who read my blog why you think it is has been bad or good. I personally think that what it comes down to is if you are for or against the war. I have to say that the last 8 years has been great for me. I really have not been truly paying attention to politics until about 2 or 3 years ago ( I mean, come on there are very few people that actually become concerned or truly interested in high school). So, what do you think? Bad or good? And why?

Um, I have been pretty interested in politics, yes, even in high school. 4 years ago I was campaigning for Bush in Las Vegas, and I loved it! I think Bush has done a fine job, and I respect him. I would never want to be president! But, I think he may have focused too much on problems overseas and forgotten about domestic problems, thus the current crisis. He could have put more effort into ensuring our domestic prospertiy and promoting the general welfare and less on the common defense. I still don't know who I'm going to vote for, though!

I've been thinking about this for a while. I think that our economic crisis is a result that has been decades in the making. So to blame it all on Pres. Bush is pretty harsh. However, I don't think Bush has been the greatest president for a lot of reasons. I don't like the war, and like a lot of people don't understand why we are over there. Every time I see on the news that another soldier has been killed it makes feel so sad for their families. I'm no scholar when it comes to Iraq, but it seems like a pointless and expensive war.
Presidential campaigns are very interesting things. The candidates talk about a lot of issues that the American people care about that they have no control over. The legislative branch controls what goes on with the economy, health care, social security, and anything else that has to do with spending. Once they pass a bill, then the President either signs or vetoes the bill.
As you said, all of the talk has been about the last eight years. If you want to know why the economy tanked, check out CREDIT DEFAULT SWAPS. One of the last bills passed under the 106th congress -- under Bill Clinton!-- was to legalize credit default swaps. These are basically "side bets" that financial speculators made that ruined the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages. This was the subject of a 60 Minutes report on Sunday night. Hopefully more people will be talking about this in the next couple of weeks!
