We were not Megann and Mitch. We were bacon and bitch. I think it fits except just the opposite. Mitch loves bacon and I am a really nice person . . . most of the time.BaconandBitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10023072674071680004noreply@blogger.comBlogger251125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1927906277848179349.post-51326567329407091682014-10-28T21:50:00.000-07:002014-10-28T21:51:08.869-07:00It has been 8 months. We weren't doing much so I wanted to try and make a rotating can rack. You know, one of these?

Well, mine wouldn't be so awesome as I was making a homemade one but you get the drift. I found a website http://foodstoragemadeeasy.net/2009/02/16/build-your-own-can-rotating-rack that gives instructions and pictures to follow along in how to make one. So, I then enlisted Mitch in my efforts. I always seem to enlist him when I have projects:)

Here is our version of making one. Not as good as theirs.

We used a template to make the rack.

We completed the project and it kind of works, we messed it up a little bit. It also took us too much time. So, we are considering it a #pinterestfail. The way I always look at it is if I can work one hour and buy it for a decent price less than or equal to what I make in an hour then I might as well just buy it.

Here is what my pantry looks like now:

Here is what I want it to look like:

I am doing such lame posts, sorry. I guess my life is just lame right now!

This week I decided to try butter, yes butter, mayonnaise, and meringue.

Butter
Who knew making butter was so easy. I just mixed whipping cream in my stand mixer for a few minutes until it started to form butter and the buttermilk. I emptied out the buttermilk and there it was! Butter! I am going to go even more from scratch next time and get raw milk, let it sit to form cream on the top and then mix up that cream to get my butter.

Mayo
I used my food processor. I added in a couple of egg yolks and turned it on. Then, I SLOWLY drizzled in oil until it started to get clumpy and that was it! Homemade mayo! I added in a little salt, some lemon juice and dijon mustard to give it some flavor. So easy!

Meringue
I had some egg whites leftover from the mayo so I decided to make meringue (cookies). The only trick with meringue is the sugar has to be super fine like powdered sugar. So, I put the sugar in my food processor until it was really fine. I read that the ratio of egg white to sugar is 1 egg white per 1/4 c sugar. I started mixing up the egg whites and a little bit of cream of tartar until soft peaks formed. Then I slowly added in the sugar until stiff peaks were formed. I was able to take the bowl and turn it upside down with no movement from the meringue. That was it! So easy! I then put the meringue on parchment paper and put in the oven at 200 degrees F for 2 hours. Yummy! Very sugary but yummy!

I decided to try these things so I knew how to make food from scratch when I am out. Look forward to more food posts! My next attempt is going to be sourdough bread, homemade tortillas with rendered lard, curds and whey, and buttermilk substitute (like sold in the store). Wish me luck!
Autumn thought that Mitch's family's miniature dachsund, Finn, was so funny!!BaconandBitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10023072674071680004noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1927906277848179349.post-28707548379333228402014-01-31T13:02:00.002-08:002014-01-31T13:06:47.365-08:00My baby is 3 months!Last week Autumn turned 3 months old! I can't believe it! She is such a sweetie and we love her so much. She sleeps like a champ and has the sweetest personality. By far my favorite thing is seeing her in the morning when she first gets up and how she smiles at me. It melts my heart every time!

She has started to hit some milestones. She found her hands this last month which was really cute. She loves to use those hands . . . by pulling on my hair. What a grip she has! She loves to play on her play mat. She loves to grab at the rings above her head and kick them.

One thing that we just crack up about is her abs of steel. She loves to just lie down on the mat and hold her legs up for long periods of time. We just laugh that she is doing yoga or pilates. It is seriously funny and cute.

Everything she does is cute :)

Another thing that is funny that she does is her fake cough and gurgling. She loves it when we fake cough or gurgle with her. She smiles every time. So cute!

Did I mention we think she is cute?

We love her coos, gummy smiles, cuddles, and even her cries. We just loving every minute of our baby girl! We love you Autumn!
It provides immunity, nutrition and is important in bonding with your baby.

According to the experts, "breast is best" and that is the way it should be. Well, let me tell you how it really is.

Again, I turn back to nursing school and remember all the lectures I had on how beneficial it was to nurse rather than use formula. So, I had it set in my mind that I was going to breastfeed. I read and read. We even went to a breastfeeding class. Yes, I said "we." I love how I dragged Mitch along to all these classes and we didn't even end up needing them! Poor thing! We should have gone through a class entitled, "How men should deal with women in all their craziness after giving birth."

At the UofU hospital they really push breastfeeding even after just giving birth. They had her trying to latch within minutes of her coming out. We tried and tried for about 45 minutes but it wasn't that successful. I just pushed that all aside because she had just come out. Surely she would latch on when we try again! Well, it didn't exactly work that way. We tried, tried and tried until I bled, had cracks, and was so tender. Bless Jackie and Kim, my nurses in post-partum, for all their help in helping me treat all of those issues. Tea bags and lanolin cream helped so much!We tried and tried and she was able to latch somewhat by the time we left the hospital. So, I thought.

The first night home was awful. Awful, awful, awful. I was trying to breastfeed her but she finally got so hungry and frustrated that she started screaming bloody murder. It got so bad I didn't know what to do and so I started crying. But, wait! I finally remembered that by the grace of God one of Mitch's co-workers had given us some extra newborn formula as a gift. Bless you Trina! As soon as I remembered that I pulled it out and made up a bottle. While I was doing that Mitch came out wondering what was wrong. He heard us both crying and was really concerned. Yep, my crying woke him up too.

It turned out her latch was not good at all. Luckily, her pediatrician's office has a lactation consultant on hand. After assessing that the positions I had her in were proper, she taught me the neatest trick! She said that newborns can't focus on two things at once. Autumn would flail her arms around while trying to feed. The lactation consultant taught me that I needed to swaddle her to keep her arms from distracting her and then she would latch better. So, every time before I fed her I would swaddle her. It worked like a charm! She latched right on!!

I had that all figured out so now nursing was going to be a breeze! Had you learned anything thus far, Megann? Apparently not. I had already forgotten that things don't work out as planned.

She was still starving even after trying to feed her for an hour at a time. I still had to majorly supplement her with formula. Ah hah! I know what I need to do! Try some herbal supplements that people suggested and what I read on the internets. I tried fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettle herb, fennel seed, and shatavari. I know you have never heard of them. I hadn't either until I tried to increase my milk supply. I tried these all for 5 weeks and was not seeing any results. Yes, I was still breastfeeding and pumping after every feeding. It wasn't the demand that was the problem. So, after talking to the midwife she determined that I have insufficient glandular tissue or IGT. Oh great! Yet another condition/syndrome/thing! There is an herb you can take called goat's rue that apparently helps the glandular tissue to develop. I had actually heard of that before so I gave it a shot. After 3 weeks it started to work! Kind of. Instead of getting nothing each time I pumped I now got 5 ml. Whoopie! Just for your reference, 5 ml is a teaspoon. So, after 30 minutes of intense pumping that is all I would get.

All in all, I tried for 9ish weeks trying to breastfeed and pump. I just had IGT and couldn't do anything about it. I tried all I could. For me, getting less than an ounce for a whole day of pumping just turned out to be too hard and not worth it so I stopped.

Do you remember DABDA? The theory of coping with a loss? Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Well, I have gone through four of these and am slowly on the path of acceptance. I think I am still in the depression phase of it as well. And maybe anger. Apparently, the lovely PCOS that I posted about on the previous post can possibly affect glandular tissue development as well as a medication I take. Lovely!

Breastfeeding does come easy to some babies and mommas, it really does. But I would dare say that it really is hard for most. It takes work, patience, and sometimes letting go.

So what, my baby is formula fed. No she doesn't get immunity protection or nutrition from my milk. But, so what. She is happy and healthy.

Formula coma-
If so, that is how we say diabetes in our household.

I ended up having gestational diabetes in my pregnancy. Great. See, I have this annoying metabolic/endocrine condition/syndrome/thing called PCOS. It can predispose one to getting gestational diabetes ("GD") in pregnancy as well as type II diabetes. Swell. Of course, I had to be one of the women that gets gestational diabetes. What did that entail for me? I had the pleasure of going on a low-carb diet. Hear that? Low-carb in pregnancy! That meant no more donut indulgences for me! That really wasn't a huge deal since I should be eating like that anyways for PCOS. But, I also had the pleasure of checking my sugar 1 hour after each meal I ate. It doesn't sound like such a big deal but it was hard to remember! All the incessant pricking of my fingers with lancets wasn't that great either.

How was I diagnosed? The dang glucose tolerance test. That means that you get to drink a 50g pure sugar drink and get your glucose level checked one hour after drinking it. If you fail, then you have the privilege of fasting then drinking 100g pure sugar drink. You get your glucose level checked before the test (fasting) 1 hour post, 2 hours post, and then 3 hours post drink. If you fail two of the levels then you have GD. Well, I failed the first 50g test, barely. So, then I had to do the 3-hour test. I drank that nasty 100g drink. Seriously, it is awful. No joke, imagine drinking a cup full of syrup. The 50g is nasty but the 100g is awful. Especially on an empty stomach! So, I drank and drank. Then, I went out into the waiting room to wait for the next blood draw. About 15 minutes after I drank the awful stuff I got really nauseated. I mean, whoa! I ran into the phlebotomy lab and said I was going to puke. They handed me a bucket and I barfed it all up. Yep, it was seriously terrible. Ok, the throwing up was nasty but really the most terrible part was not that. In pregnancy, I developed what one might call occasional "incontinence". When I sneezed or coughed I would pee a little bit. So what?! Don't judge! Ok, not such a big deal, right? Not so. I threw up so hard I practically peed my pants! Yep! I freakin' peed my pants! Think that is the worst part? Nope. I called the midwife and told her what happened and asked if there was another option and she said that doing the glucose drink is really the most accurate. You guessed it. I had to do it again! I had to drink that glucose again!! This time I was smart and took a lovely zofran (nausea pill) before I went in for the test. It worked and I was able to keep the drink down. Yay for me! Nay for me actually because I failed two of the tests. I officially had GD.

To be honest, all of that seriously wasn't a big deal though in the grand scheme of things. I will tell you what was a big deal to me though. Because of the stupid diabetes, I was automatically put in the category of induction which I didn't not know was the case until a few weeks before I was due. I found out about my GD around 24 weeks and if they mentioned it to me about the possibility of being induced then I was not listening. Apparently, if you have GD controlled by medication then you are induced at 39 or 40 weeks at the latest. If you have diet-controlled GD then you are induced at 40 to 41 weeks. I ended up in the lovely category of the "grey zone." They weren't sure. Due to my dang PCOS I was already on a diabetic medication when they tested me for the gestational diabetes. After I found out I adhered to a strict diabetic diet. But, because I was already on the medication when the GD was confirmed they weren't sure which category I was in. So, they erred on the side of caution. I was put in the medication category of needing to be induced at 39 to 40 weeks. Oh, and because of the GD I also had to get non-stress tests and ultrasounds for 2 weeks before my due date. Yes, I love more medical bills. Please, give me more! One of the risks of GD is a having a large baby. So, they prefer to have the baby out around your due date. Going over is pretty much not allowed.

This is all very important because it was very important for me to have a natural labor. I always said since nursing school the one thing I did not want to have happen when I had a baby was to be induced with pitocin. Pitocin is wicked. It is so painful. The contractions are one on top of the other. No breaks. (I can attest that this is true!) Also, since nursing school I had always planned for a natural delivery. That plan continued and Mitch and I prepared for a natural delivery. We went to classes, read, and did a video kit. We practiced for several weeks before the delivery. We were prepared! Doing it natural (for me that meant no pitocin and no epidural) was going to happen! Oh wait, nope. If I didn't go on my own before 40 weeks then I was to be induced. Obviously, I didn't go before my due date even after much effort. Ok, I thought I will *try* to do without an epidural while getting pitocin. I told the midwife I was going to try all while knowing full well I would most likely get an epidural. Well, I was right all along. Pitocin sucks!!!! I tried all the positions and techniques we learned as we prepared for a natural birth. They were no good in this situation. The pitocin seriously never gave me a break. It felt like my uterus was in a constant, awful contraction. Not only do contractions suck but pitocin contractions are the worst! I finally threw in the towel. I caved! I got the epidural!

Ahhhhh. It was divine :)

(I honestly thought about not getting an epidural because I didn't want to pay the anesthesiology fee :)

What did I learn? Probably that I should have asked what having GD meant for delivery but I don't know how I would have known to do that. Well, maybe I probably should have known that since I had a semester of labor and delivery in nursing school. But, to be honest I paid attention the least in that semester. Oops.

What did I also learn? I learned that my baby was delivered successfully and healthy and so it was all okay!

Here I am before I knew what was about to happen in the next 24 hours! I was so excited!

There you go! Gestational diabetes in all it's glory!

Don't go too far. Breastfeeding is next!BaconandBitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10023072674071680004noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1927906277848179349.post-75973050781323212392013-12-26T15:28:00.003-08:002013-12-27T14:11:28.011-08:00Baby girl Autumn's birth storyI wanted to give a short version of Autumn's birth story so here goes! I know it looks long but I promise, it is condensed.

I was scheduled to get induced on Monday the 21st of October if I didn't go on my own before that. Well, after a lot of walking and other things :) it didn't happen so I was set to be induced! I had gestational diabetes so the protocol is to get induced if you don't go before 40 weeks. I'll talk about more about the gestational diabetes later.

Well, we arrived at the University of Utah Hospital at 8am and I got changed and all hooked up. I would say one great thing about getting induced is that you are able to get ready and all packed up with ease before you head to the hospital. To say that I did not want to get induced was an understatement. Ever since I was able to witness births in nursing school, I always said I did not want to get induced with Pitocin because it is wicked painful stuff! Well, what ended up happening? I was induced with Pitocin. I mean, Mitch and I did several months preparation for a natural birth. We took classes and also did a video kit called the Pink Kit. We practiced positions, learned about the pelvis, learned new relaxation techniques, etc., etc. I was seriously prepared to have a natural birth.

So, the midwife (the UofU midwives are awesome!!) started me off with Cytotec to see if my cervix would ripen that way. Well, after 4 hours it didn't work. So, we started the inevitable Pitocin. Ugh. I decided to see what it felt like to have the contractions so I did not get the epidural. Well, I tried for a few hours but like I knew it would be, the pitocin was incredibly painful. For me, it didn't feel like uterine pain like with the time of the month. It felt like the sharpest most painful gas pain ever!! The thing about pitocin is that you don't get any bit of a break in between contractions. The contractions are one on top of another! I wasn't dilating past what I came in with a 3, and so I decided to get the epidural. I just didn't know how long it would take for me to dilate all the way and didn't know how long I could last. It is a good thing I did because I didn't fully dilate for 8 more hours! There is no way I could have lasted 8 more hours.

After the blessed epidural (which is totally awesome!), I was able to go to sleep. Well, kind of. The nurses ended up being in my room about every 15 minutes. Turns out baby girl didn't like the pitocin so much when they tried to turn it up. So, I had to get a terbutaline injection to relax my uterus as well as be given IV fluid and put on oxygen. She just couldn't keep up her oxygen levels. It also turned out she didn't like being on my left side or on my back (which is usually the case anyways). After the nurses got that all figured out I was finally able to sleep for longer than 15 minutes. I am glad that I was a nurse in that situation because I wasn't scared at all. I rarely freak out at things. I knew that I was in good hands and that baby girl was going to be okay. So, when I had to get on oxygen, get the shot as well as having about 5 nurses and the midwife in the room during the drama I was just fine.

At about 6:30am the midwife checked me and I was fully dilated and it was time to push. I pushed every ten minutes for a while and then finally started to really push at about 8:15 or so. I pushed and pushed and was doing well but Autumn was not liking it. Finally, she just had to come out. Her heart rate went down to 40 so it was time. And yank her out the midwife did! I paid for that later! (Tears are the worst! worst! worst!)

Autumn came out at 8:47am on October 22, 2013. She had tons of black hair and dark skin (due to the lack of oxygen). Honestly, the thought came across my mind that she didn't look like my child. Ha! She also had the most plump lips I have ever seen! I kept saying "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!" and Mitch teared up. I was in just so much shock that my baby was finally here!

The NICU team had to come because she kept dropping her oxygen levels before birth. But, she was just fine so they didn't have to stay long. They put her on my chest right when she came out and it was so amazing! They are really big on skin to skin and breastfeeding there so they started her breastfeeding right when she came out! (There will be a post about breastfeeding later on. Breastfeeding did not turn out the way I planned!)

Mitch's mom, sister, my mom, my dad, and my brother were all there when she was born and were able to come in soon after she was delivered. It was very special to have all of them there. They were all so excited, well mostly the Grandmas and Brooke :) Our little Autumn had arrived!!

Was it the most amazing experience ever!? Why yes it was! Did it turn out completely different than what I wanted? Why yes it did. But, it was okay! We are so in love with our little baby Autumn! She is so sweet and happy.

Here are some pics from the birth and after. I will post more about post-partum and home later. It might not be for a week or so but I will. I am still getting used to time management with a baby.
I get wicked back and rib pain enough to make me have to lie down all day, oh the heartburn, the painfully itchy belly, sciatic pain that makes we waddle, and the crazy fatigue. Too bad I am only 7 months!! Anyone else want to chime in?
I am told it is all worth it in the end :) So, here is to hoping October 20th gets here soon!

Funny fact (or not so funny fact), you know how the rule of thumb is to only gain a few pounds during the first trimester? Well, I gained the big 'ole 10. Seriously? I was so freakin' sick even until about 22 weeks. What the??

I do have one positive thing to say. Seeing and feeling her kick is the best thing ever! :)))
We are having a baby girl! She is due October 20th. We are beyond excited!! Needless to say, I am going to pick up on blogging again because I feel like there will actually be something to post about now. I mean, Mitch and I are cool and all but I felt like it was getting a little boring with the blog just being about us. So, to all of you 2 people out there that look at my blog, look forward to some more posts :)
I planned a surprise party for Mitch's graduation and it was really fun! It was hard to keep it a surprise but so worth it. We had the party in our backyard in Tennessee on a perfect night. The party was the day before his graduation. I just had to do something special for him. I have been wanting to throw him a party since the first day of graduate school. So, it was kind of a big deal. I couldn't have done it without the help of all the friends in the branch bringing food and helping with decorations. Thank you so much! Here are some pics below. Enjoy!
I had always wanted to go to BYU since I was a little girl and I was so excited to start. I remember buying a bed set as well as a dish set at Target with my mom. I remember buying new clothes. I remember driving down to Provo with my mom and getting everything so I could move into the dorms. It was all so exciting! I met my roommate, Jessica, and I couldn't wait to become friends with her. All of my other roommates were moved in when I got there. They were from all different places, New Jersey, Florida, Idaho and Utah. I just thought that was so cool. I would have to say that my favorite part of freshman year was the week before school started. I thought it was the greatest time I had ever had. There were dances all the time, I was meeting boys like crazy, and I was staying up way too late. I had a blast!

My first class was nutrition in the Crabtree building. I can remember what I wore that first day. I walked to class just beaming! I will never forget the weirdest thing about that class. There was this guy that sat behind me that may have had a slight obsession with my hair. I had super long hair and I kid you not he played with my hair during class all of the time. It was so awkward! I mean what do you say, please don't touch my hair?

Some of my favorite memories are:
- Eating wraps at the Cougareat
-Inevitably hearing someone play John Schmidt's "Waterfalls" on the piano at the Wilky
- Taking 7:00am ballet and running to that class every morning so I could make it in time.
-Make-out Take-out
-My date with the guy who didn't know I was a freshman
-Ice cream at the Creamery
-Walking to football games
-Banana bread
-Dances
-Going to homecoming
-Being part of the "everyone runs in Provo" club. Running on Center Street.
-Spending a lot of time in the periodicals at the library
-My freshman ward which to be honest I really didn't like
-Not having a car
-The walk of shame (the walk back to the dorms after not doing so well at the testing center)

I could go on and on!! Enjoy some of my pics from freshman year!
I was and still am so proud!

For the last 8 years I have been with Mitch, school has been a part of our lives. It has been a long, hard road. But, Mitch reached the light at the end of the tunnel.

Mitch is now a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

I was tearing up during his graduation commencement. He has worked so hard. You just don't understand. He has been so diligent and has remained committed to what he wants to do. I don't know how he did it. I couldn't have done it. I was so proud to see him walk in the processional. Because he was part of the doctoral candidates he was the 5th person to walk in and that is when I started to tear up. I cried off an on during the ceremony. I took I would say, a 1,000 pictures. It was just the greatest day.

I am so proud of you Mitchie! You deserve it!

*On a sidenote. Why doesn't anyone ever tell you how hard it is going to be to go through all that schooling? I mean, a lot of people do it and a lot of people we know have and are doing it. I never heard much about it. Well, for those of you who are wondering, it is very hard! It is worth it but it is so hard! I wish someone would have maybe prepared us just a little bit. We were just wingin' it.

Here's to wingin' it!

Congratulations Doctor Peterson!
This post is not only for allergy sufferers. It can be used in colds and nasal congestion (which really is most likely an allergy but you just don't want to admit it).

I have every allergy known. The only thing I am not allergic to? Cats :) How purrfect.

I also get wicked, wicked sinus infections. I mean head exploding, have to take work off, the most powerful antibiotics for 3 months, and needing to take steroids type of sinus infections.

A few years ago I decided enough was enough and I started to really do something about it especially since they got a million times worse moving here to Tennessee. I searched and experimented with almost everything.

Do you want to know what I found is the best treatment? The Neti Pot.

I am dead serious. It has worked wonders. I am not just giving you my opinion, I am giving you objective data. I used to get AT LEAST 3-4 serious and 5-10 minor sinus infections during the winter months up to the end of March. Last year I got 1 minor one and *knock on wood* I have not had one this year.

I realize it looks weird. It is weird and gross but it is by far superior than any nasal rinse. Trust me, I have tried them all. Not only is it the best method but the mixture put in the pot is the very mild on the mucous membranes. It has sodium bicarb and sodium chloride in a perfect mixture.

Here are my tips for use:

It is best while done showering. I know what you are thinking. Sick! Just trust me.

Mix with lukewarm water.

It is best done in the shower because it is humid and moist which helps to loosen the drainage/crap in your sinuses and throat. Though, you can do it over the sink and it will still work just not as well.

Do this every day. I personally think everyone should do this.

When you are feeling more congestion or are sick do it 2-3 times per day.

I am telling you all. It works!!

Since I am a serious sinus/allergy sufferer I also take zyrtec every day. Yep, every single day. I do notice a difference when I miss a day. Also, I often take 2 zyrtecs on bad days. I know, I am not supposed to. (I have to take zyrtec because I also get hives. So, not everyone needs to. But, it does seriously help with the sinuses and nasal passages as well).

The daily use of the neti pot and daily zyrtec has seriously changed my life!!

*I really have not gotten any colds either. For me, colds are precipitated by my allergies on most occasions. But, on other occasions I think it is because my nose and throat are cleared often of the virus that usually sticks around.

If you need more tips on how to best treat a sinus infection just ask me. I am a pro!!!

Good luck!
We have been busy these days! Mitch is studying like crazy as he gets ready to take the biggest test of his life on March 29th, the national licensure exam! THE test!! I have been busy too with things but I will get to that in another post.

Until then, I thought I would add some humor to your day with some journal entries of mine. I have kept a pretty regular journal since I was in 4th grade so I have some quality entries! :))

3/15/1995 (5th grade)
"I hate boys they're jerks (at least the gross ones are) I'm going to tell you something that I would never talk to anyone. Today Garrick said something like on the calculator he said BOOBLESS it made me cry but no one saw me. I'll tell you the rest tomorrow. Got to go bye!"

9/26/1996 (7th grade)
"I've done a lot of things. I went to Lagoon and as always it rocked. Oh and I have started Junior High and it is awesome!" (Yes, Lagoon does rock. Clearly I was only a few days into 7th grade because we all know that 7th grade is the worst!!!)

6/19/1998 (in between 8th and 9th grade)
"We had youth conference and the youth conference dance. It was sssssooooo fun! I don't know, I really wanted to dance with Adam Beckstrom but everytime he was taken. Cutie!" (wt? I have absolutely no recollection of having a crush on him but apparently I did! And, I was bold enough to attempt to ask him to dance!)

2/21/1999 (9th grade)
"We had the dance. It was great! Well, I got a phone call that Antonio Frasero was going to ask me out. Lie. I knew it. But at the dance me and Andy danced 3 times! We admitted to each other that we like each other. It was great! Why can't I be 16!" (It was no secret I thought Andy aka "Antonio Frasero" was fine!!)

10/2/1998 (9th grade again)
"Last night I slept over at Ash's with Heather and Kassie. We made a Titanic video. It was so funny! I can't even explain!" (Yes, we were cool and made home movies. Think, "Iceberg straight ahead!")

Later on down in the entry about school that day " . . .3rd-Buttorf wasn't there! Yes! No creepy man!"
(ha! ha! El Presidente!)

2/02/2001 (Junior year)
"Holy crap! I haven't written in so long! NSYNC in Vegas was awesome! They were all so hot! It was the funnest thing ever. NSYNC was so good! And Justin Timberlake's hips were soooo good. I love em."
(Um, ew. I was kind of creepy! Oh, wait I still love his hips!)

4/7/2002 (Senior year)
(Referring to Choir tour senior year in San Diego). "I almost peed my pants! Laura, Tricia, Katie, Shannyn, Molly, Ash and I went on these things called rickshaws. We made our drivers Marco and Carlos race. It was so funny! By the end Carlos was dripping in sweat and his hat was covered in sweat! We were screaming and cheering. Marco! Carlos!"

Those are only a glimpse into the many funny things I wrote in my many journals. Hope you got a good laugh!!

One of the rickshaws and our favorite pedalist, Marco.
Grey's Anatomy is partially correctIn October I started a new position at an awesome hospital here in Nashville. I am working in the surgical ICU, or SICU if you want to be cool and know the lingo. I am not very smart. Let me explain why. I was going to do critical care right after graduation and had the opportunity to do so because I did my internship in critical care. But, I didn't. Somedays I wish I would have just done that right after graduation because I would be so much further along. 4 years later and here I am, starting over in a way. It is such a toss up. I learned so many valuable lessons at my other positions over the last few years. I have learned how to assess a patient with my eyes and instincts rather than by machines. Also, I learned a lot about people, the good and bad. But, I feel like if that is what I originally wanted to do what took me so long?! Well, here I am. Training for a new job . . . again. I have had so much to learn and re-learn. I have forgotten so many things! It is sad.

Does this look intimidating? I really feel bad for families when they have to walk in a room that looks like this. If I didn't know anything medical I would be frightened out of my mind!

This picture cracks me up. Critical care nurses are really not that cool.

Now on to Grey's Anatomy. I have worked in a lot of teaching facilities which means I am surrounded by interns (21st grade), residents (23rdish grade), and fellows (25ish grade). This hospital is a teaching facility and I just have to say that there is a lot of shenanigans that go down. I mean these doctors are at the hospital every day for 12 hours or more a day. So, they have to get their flirting action on (and more than flirting *snicker*) somewhere.
Here's the deal. Imagine what you look like after working 7 days straight for 16 hours or more. This is where TV gets it wrong. This is what they look like on Grey's.

I really have a lot of respect for doctors. A lot of nurses are very negative and have harsh words for doctors. I tend to think differently (for the most part). They put in a lot of schooling, sacrifice a lot (including sleep!), and work insane hours. I guess it all pays off when they are attending physicians but man oh man, I think it would be rough getting there!

Why in the heck did we give her a middle name? Because I always have to say so and so "poo" or something cheesy like that. So, I call her Sagee Lou. I am kind of ridiculous I know.

Sage is 4 months old. Yes, 4 months and she is already that big. She is a Belgian malinois mix. Belgian malinois are basically the Dutch version of German Shephards and are a medium size dog vs. a large size (German Shephard). She is a rescue dog. She was found with her brother wandering along a major highway.

Interesting factoid. Belgian malinois breeds are awesome. Why? A Belgian malinois was used in killing Bin Ladin.

Once upon a time (about 3-4 years ago) Mitch was watching a dog show. Yep, he watches dog shows. Anyways, he saw a "mali" on one (the "cool" people who have malinois call them "mali") and has been obsessed with getting one ever since. If I could count how many times he talked about one it would probably be equivalent to the amount of times I have looked at this blog, www.whatkatewore.com. Needless to say, he has been obsessing about getting this dog.

Problem, they are purebreds. Purebreds used for police training and killing Osama = $$$$.

So, when he found Sage through a rescue organization and that she was a malinois mix we just knew it was the closest to getting his dream dog right now.

This breed is very agile, physical and super smart. Oh, and they love to be with their companions. That means we have to keep her busy physically and mentally.

We have to walk/run her every morning and night.

How does the kitty like her? Well, she doesn't love her and probably never will but she is tolerating her more and more every day. Hissing was very common the first few days. Poor Sage just wants to play with Gabby but Gabby can't stand how hyper she is.

Here is the lamest part. I feel like I have a toddler or baby. We have to be on a "schedule." I constantly have to watch her. I have to keep her occupied or she tears things up. She always wants a snack. Potty training. Teething. We have to keep things out of her reach. She eats random things off the floor (she ate a ketchup packet the other day, great. Thought she did smush a cockroach the other day which I appreciated). I have to learn how to discipline her properly. She falls and runs into things and just plops around. Seriously, I even worry about her during the day.

We really want to train her right so that doesn't become destructive due to her intelligence or so that she doesn't harm anyone by her physicality.

Here to being one of "those" couples!!!

**I really hope to blog more. I hope to update you on these topics: Mitch's b-day, our 6th anniversary tomorrow for which we have planned nothing because we are kind of broke, why we are broke, 4th of July, my flowers that I have dutifully attended to this summer, Mitch's clinicals, car accident, wounds with cockroaches, our neighborhood, The Help, my awesome Mom, and my aforementioned fave website www.whatkatewore.com.

BaconandBitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10023072674071680004noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1927906277848179349.post-46716303561242166592011-06-24T21:19:00.000-07:002011-06-24T21:22:09.564-07:00Our house in the middle of the street

We've moved

Our rental house. Cicadas everywhere!Interesting factoid. Did you know that every 13 years the cicada brood XIX of the south emerges? They all emerge for one purpose: to mate. Well, I didn't either until now!

There are annual cicadas which I hate because bugs are just gross but there aren't that many and they don't last too long so I survive. But not this year! They are everywhere!!!!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwww!

Seriously, this picture accurately shows how it is right now. This is not an exaggeration.

Mitch's reaction when a cicada gets on him, "Meg, pull over. There is a cicada on my shorts."

My reaction, "Ahhhhh!! Get it off! Get if off!! Eeeewww!!!" (As I shake my hair and body in a well, hysterical fashion).

Twice in church yesterday people had to go outside with a cicada clenched in fist because cicadas got in. Eeeeeeewwwwww.

I am going to post more later because I have a lot to post about our Utah trip and we moved. No more rabbits/cockfights!!!!BaconandBitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10023072674071680004noreply@blogger.com2
